Birmingham City Council is seeking a Service Designer to join their Product function, focusing on designing and improving services for residents, businesses, and colleagues. The role involves working in multidisciplinary teams to create user-centered, accessible public services and contributing to the design of end-to-end services.

Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the design and improvement of end‑to‑end services, working under the guidance of senior practitioners
  • Supporting discovery, research and design activities to understand user needs and service problems
  • Helping to map services, identify pain points and co‑design improved experiences with users and colleagues
  • Working closely with product managers, developers, researchers and service teams in multidisciplinary environments
  • Applying user‑centred design methods to help teams test ideas, learn quickly and improve services iteratively
  • Championing accessible, inclusive and human‑centred design principles
  • Learning from feedback, data and evidence to continuously improve your practice
  • Contributing to the wider design and product community by sharing learning and supporting collaborative ways of working

Qualification

Required

  • Demonstrable experience or exposure to service design, user‑centred design or related practice
  • An understanding of working in agile environments as part of multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong design skills, communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence to collaborate and contribute ideas
  • A thoughtful and reflective approach, willing to challenge assumptions and learn from evidence
  • A commitment to designing services and products with the user experience at the centre
